About the artist

Stanley William Hayter was one of the most important printmakers of the twentieth century. He took the concept of printing beyond its traditional application as a mean of reproduction and illustration and discovered its creative potential. Working alongside surrealist artists like Miro, Dali and Picasso, his best prints were produced using the surrealist technique of automatism – spontaneous drawing which comes straight form the subconscious. Later in life, Hayter worked in New York where he collaborated with De Kooning, Pollock and Rothko. His style of work continued to change and he developed new graphic techniques including a way of producing multicoloured prints from a single plate.
